"Sorrow in itself is not repentance; neither is remorse, nor self-condemnation, nor self-loathing, nor external reformation. These all are its attendants or consequences; but repentance itself (metanoia) is a turning from sin to holiness, from a state of sin to a holy state".
Terjemahan:
Penyesalan itu sendiri bukan pertobatan, demikian pula penyesalan dalam (remorse), kemarahan kepada diri sendiri atau reformasi eksternal. Semua ini hanyalah konsekuensi. Pertobatan itu sendiri adalah sebuah pembalikan dari dosa kepada kesucian, dari status berdosa kepada status suci.
